Welcome to Thomson Tours!
Our favourite places to visit in Cornwall
Thomson Tours started operations in Wimbledon back in 2017. The group is known for keeping your step count high with a splattering of 'Fun' facts from Director of Navigations, Nick.
Here's an overview of our favourite spots that we'd recommend exploring if you have time.
St. Michael's Mount
An iconic sight that also marks home. A great way to spend an afternoon, plus the Godolphin Inn in Marazion, opposite, has delicious food with a view!
Check the tide times before you go to walk across the causeway - or pack some swimmies…
Minack Theatre
An open-air theatre carved into the side of a cliff. If the performance is particularly tragic, you can also do some dolphin watching. The beach there (Porthcurno) is an Instagram favourite and don't forget to pop into the Telegraph Museum next door where Lucy's (Maid of Honour) dad volunteers!
Eden Project
Merrion's first experience into the world of work and where Nick spent a lot of time ferrying her to and from her internship. The biomes are legendary and well worth a visit.
Don't go on a rainy Wednesday!!
St. Ives
This is one of Nick's favourites. The walk around the headland is a good one for seal-watching and truly blowing the cobwebs away. The town is filled with great restaurants and beaches. The St. Ives Gin shop does tastings - but the Twin Fin flavoured rum is a personal favourite. For shopping, a true Cornish icon is a stripey top from Seasalt Cornwall - Alison (Merrion's mum) currently holds the record for the most pink stripey tops…
Jubilee Pool
An outdoor Lido which somehow is colder than the actual sea… but it now has a heated section! One of the last few remaining in the country, you can also walk from Jubilee to Newlyn along the Promenade which is particularly fun in stormy weather.
The Lizard
The most southerly point in the UK (not to be confused with Land's End which is the most south-westerly point), it has some stunning scenery including the walk to Kynance Cove. where you can also find Serpentine Rock.
While on the Peninsula, you can also visit the Chocolate Factory close to Mullion harbour where some of Poldark was filmed.
South West Coast Path
If you've read/watched The Salt Path you might be inspired to try some of this legendary trail - which actually runs right through our venue!! If you want any advice, Nick's Great Uncle Peter has been working his way round.
Lands End to Sennen
A great stretch of coast path ending in another one of Nick's favourite places in Cornwall. The pub on the corner is great for a refreshing pint after walking the cliffs. Sennen is known for its surfing and the surf school is meant to be good fun.
On a stormy day, the harbour makes for a great watch as the waves can often roll over next to the Lifeboat house.
Great Tramways of Cornwall Vol.II
Yes, it's a thing and yes somehow there's more than one volume but if you want a different way to explore the county Merrion and Nick recommend the Portreath Branchline Trail which takes you through Tehidy Woods where you can feed (very fat) grey squirrels!
If you want one of the most challenging park run routes the one at Lands End is something else. Expect a lot of uphill and doing the same route 3 times, but it's a great one to tick off the bucket list! It's also fairly quiet and Merrion even managed to come second in her age category (ok, there were only two of us but still!)
Pasties
Warrens is the best pasty. Period. End of conversation. BUT if you are desperate to expand your horizons - Lucy's (Maid of Honour) favourite is Philps in Hayle.
At all costs avoid the Cornish Oven… they are not good.
Trevaskis
A family favourite. The desserts are HUGE and serves great Cornish produce. Nick's go-to is the Mille Feuille.
Mackerel Sky Bar
Found in Newlyn this fish-mex type restaurant only has a couple of tables but worth the wait.
Jelberts
The best ice cream in Cornwall and home to Olympian Helen Glover's family. They only do one flavour: Vanilla but get it with a flake and it'll take you back.
Polgoon
Perfectly situated within staggering distance from Merrion's parents home, this local vineyard is homely and a nice way to spend a couple of hours.
Harbour Fish and Chips, St. Ives
Minimal fuss and the platters are a great variety of deep-fried sea food.
We hope you enjoy exploring Cornwall as much as we do!
